Into the Sands

F. R. Avatar

The year 2021 may have had some notable live-action movies like Shang-Chi And the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-man: No Way Home, but they were not as rich and deep as Warner Brother Picture’s Dune. Directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothee Chalamet, Oscar Isaac and Zendaya, this movie may very well be the best movie of 2021.

The story begins in a futuristic world where the only way to navigate the stars is through a drug called “spice.” By decree of the Emperor, the Duke of the planet Caladan, Leto Atreides and his son Paul Atreides are relocated to the desert planet Arrakis, the sole source of the spice. They intend to help the locals recover from the Harkonnens and in return gain their military strength. Things start off well for the Atreides until they find out there is a traitor in their midst.  From there things keep going downhill.

I enjoyed the computer animation of the different gadgets and vehicles, like the dragonfly chopper, the body shields and—let’s not forget—the sand worms.

Though the story is good, it can be a bit hard to follow.  It also depicts violence, gore, drugs, alcohol and mild nudity. This movie may not be for kids, but it is the perfect movie for teens and adults who have been waiting for a good sci-fi flick or those who have read the book and waited for a good adaptation. I can’t wait for the sequel!
