Shirts, dresses, and shoes will generally top a list of fashion articles. But isn’t it hard finding enough of those items to wear something different every day? And what about different, stylish, and affordable? A capsule wardrobe with plenty of embellishments is a wonderful solution, and one of my favorite ways to achieve this is through my hair. A select collection of hair accessories will add timeless style to an otherwise simple outfit without breaking the bank. Besides, accessorizing is a very New York concept, which is always a bonus.
To begin with, hair is an accessory by itself. Curls one day, straight the next, braids or a French twist: the list goes on and on. The ability to do many different hairstyles can serve the same purpose as owning a dozen different shirts.
Bright ribbons and scarves are two of my favorite methods for accessorizing a hairstyle. They are simple, inexpensive, and easy to use, plus they add an almost unbelievable flair to what was once a generic look. I can’t number the times I’ve had people tell me my hair looks so nice when all I did was tie a scarf to the base of my ponytail or use one like a headband. Which brings me to my next point: Never underestimate the power of a good headband. There is something so special about this accessory—so don’t forget it.
Another tool that I recently found useful is a hair stick. People will sometimes use pencils to hold their hair in a bun, and this is the same concept. Now that salons and beauty companies have started manufacturing special sticks, they have also grown more popular. I love them because there are many ways to use them that can make the simplest updo look so intricate.
Finally, I cannot stress how much embellished clips (flowers, bows, etc.) and barrettes are a must for anyone. Even “plain” fasteners can be the final touch. And this is the beauty of hair accessories—you don’t need much, but the impact is so large. Big scrunchies are also a go-to for me, making a simple bun or ponytail stand out from normal.
Hair decorations are perfect for any occasion, and what is so wonderful is that many don’t require a large amount of skill to apply. They can be found anywhere—Amazon, craft stores, drug stores—and are inexpensive, which makes it easy to have multiple options. Say goodbye to wardrobe worries and rethink your fashion list with a few of these stylish embellishments.
