When people are asked to name the most iconic movies that defined the 1980s, Top Gun is at the top of the list. Directed by Tony Scott and distributed by Paramount Pictures Corporation, this 1986 movie about naval aviators has earned its place as one of the most acclaimed movies of all time.
The story begins when U.S. Navy aviators Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) are sent to Top Gun, a Naval Fighter Weapons School for only “the best of the best,” where they must compete against others to be the very best pilot and graduate as number one. Unfortunately, Maverick’s recklessness makes this difficult; he disobeys orders and ignores important rules.
Besides the stunning flight scenes and intriguing plot, Top Gun is also known for its remarkable soundtrack, comprised of many songs including “Danger Zone”and “Take My Breath Away,” two of the greatest hits of 1986. The music also creates that overwhelming ‘80s vibe that many people cherish.
Parents should be aware that this movie contains some language and sexuality, as well as occasional drinking and smoking. Top Gun can also be perceived by some as a movie that glorifies conflict and war. While it is true that the movie does have a battle scene in which lives are lost, it is for the purpose of providing action and suspense and does not promote the idea that war is ethical in any way. Overall, Top Gun is a perfect movie for teenagers and adults who are looking for a movie that has both thrilling action and passionate romance.
Although some people prefer the 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, it failed to re-create the lively energy the original delivered, which is why Top Gun remains a unique and legendary classic.
