A Most Amusing Art Class

Yasemin Sezen Avatar

It wouldn’t occur to anyone that a serious class taken in school can have room for some silliness. After all, school is not the time for sharing ridiculously absurd childhood stories or discussing meaningless, random things. There may be one exception, however, in a particular art class at Mid-Metro Academy.

Thanks to Sandy Adler, Mid-Metro’s beloved art teacher, art class is also a place for lighthearted conversation. Because of her, art students at Mid-Metro can share random stories and laugh along with the teacher all while creating an amazing piece of artwork with Mrs. Adler’s instruction. Mrs. Adler herself is an incredibly talented artist.

Mrs. Adler says that art has always been her “thing.” Even at a very young age, it became obvious to her that she excelled in art. She knew that math just wasn’t right for her, and sports did not seem to treat her too kindly, either. So when she went to college, she acquired degrees in both Fine Arts and Graphic Design.

She began teaching art when the homeschool co-op she belonged to asked her to teach a class for six weeks. She decided to give it a try, and that’s when she began to focus mainly on drawing and oil pastel. The students enjoyed her classes so much that she continued to teach more semesters of art classes.

Mrs. Adler’s artwork is almost immaculate. Her oil pastel masterpieces glow with color while her charcoal drawings boldly stand out on the otherwise pale sheet of paper. With her instruction, Mid-Metro students learn to draw things they never would have thought they could draw.

Whether one is in her Drawing Basics, Beginning Oil Pastel, or Mixed Media class, it is almost guaranteed that the student will not only take home a lovely piece of artwork, but also the memory of the entire art class listening to entertaining stories, like the one about how Mrs. Adler once drove by a crazy runaway horse. If it were not for the hilarious conversation that is always a part of her class, how would we know that Mrs. Adler enjoys pineapple pizza?
