How to Sell Handcrafted Goods

Money. The word immediately captures everyone’s attention. Everyone always wants more money, and there are many ways to make some extra bucks. One way is to sell handcrafted items. For example, I sold homemade lip balm at the Homeschool Maker’s Market three different times and ended up with profit every time. No matter where you are and what you are selling, there are a few basic steps that everyone should follow in order to efficiently turn a profit.

1: Decide what kind of item you are going to sell. To make sure that you will get a lot of customers, you should pick something that everyone can use regardless of their age or interests. Examples would be lip balm, potholders, or birthday cards. Make sure you have all the materials you will need for your project. The time it takes to craft all your items will vary depending on what you are going to make. It is also a good idea to create a name and logo for your “business.” There are many different software programs that allow you to create a design, such as one called Inkscape. Having a logo will be fun and will make your creations look more professional.

2: Pricing. Probably the most important thing to consider while selling an item is pricing. In order to make a profit, you have to make sure the price of each individual item is more than the amount it costs to make it. However, you must find a good balance; nobody will want to buy overpriced items. Deals are also a good idea and will encourage customers to buy more things. For example, selling five items for the price of four.

3: Find a location to have your sale. Browse the internet for opportunities to sell at markets and events. Look for nearby places that are free or low-cost; you don’t want to pay $100 just to set up a booth. A place with a lot of foot traffic would also be ideal; you are more likely to sell out if you have more potential customers walking by.

Remember that these are just the essential steps to keep in mind. There are many variables that could affect your business, and it’s up to you to figure out what tactics work best for you to end up with a good profit. Selling handcrafted items is a simple and enjoyable way to earn some extra bucks. It also teaches you skills about business that could prove to be useful later in life.
